The magic mirror

What drives an artist who has a pressing image-shape in mind to discard all the expressive means they know and rely on a formless surface - metal, plastic, cardboard - to reflect this image through adequate elaboration? Throughout the years I searched for my own answer, altogether different from the reason that gave birth and fame to chalcography, i.e. being able to obtain several original prints from one matrix. I investigated my reasons behind so much toiling and researching. In fact, transferring the original image-shape to paper required, and still requires, days or weeks of work, sometimes even longer, and a perfect mastery of all known techniques. At times the artist needs to search for new solutions or revisit overlooked techniques. The relationship between artist and matter (soon to become a reflective surface) becomes a challenge: on one side, all the knowledge, cunning and determination to bend a silent and still surface to one's will, on the other, the technical difficulties, the tortuous paths, the unforeseen accidents, and the errors that are always possible and often irreparable. Every time the engraver sets out on a new route, this is the challenge that lies in wait: obtaining the "magic mirror" that will answer their every wish and only show what the author wants it to, without concealing any sign, thickness or coarseness that have been forever imprinted on its surface.
Despite my knowledge and control of the creation, when I reach the end of the path and I lift the sheet from the press I find my heart in turmoil. But then I see printed on paper what had only been in my imagination and I understand that the spell was successful, that the formula was right and that the "magic mirror" is ready to fulfil my every wish.


Lo specchio magico

Cosa spinge un artista, con una immagine-forma che urge nella sua mente, a scartare tutti i mezzi espressivi a lui noti, e ad affidare questo suo bisogno ad una superficie amorfa: metallo, plastica, cartone, che opportunamente elaborata ne rifletta l’immagine? A questa domanda ho cercato di dare, nel corso degli anni, una mia risposta, che diverge senza ogni dubbio dalla ragione che ha dato origine e fama alla calcografia: ovvero la possibilità di trarre da una matrice un certo numero di opere originali. Ho cercato di indagare il perché di tanta fatica e ricerca. In effetti ottenere sul foglio di stampa l’immagine-forma che stava all’origine nella mia mente ha richiesto e richiede giorni, settimane di lavoro e a volte tempi più lunghi; richiede inoltre il perfezionamento ed il controllo di tutte le tecniche conosciute e a volte la ricerca di soluzioni nuove o la rilettura di tecniche scarsamente praticate. Il rapporto che si instaura tra l’artista e la materia che deve farsi superficie riflettente diventa allora una sfida: da un lato tutte le conoscenze, le astuzie, la volontà di piegare al proprio volere una superficie muta e inerte e dall’altro le difficoltà tecniche, i percorsi tortuosi, gli imprevisti sempre in agguato e gli errori sempre possibili e a volte senza rimedio. Questa è la sfida che attende l’incisore ogni volta che si appresta ad iniziare un nuovo percorso: ottenere lo “specchio magico” che risponda ad ogni suo desiderio, che mostri solo ciò che l’autore vuole far vedere, senza che esso possa celare alcun segno, spessore o rugosità che sono stati impressi per sempre sulla sua superficie.
Ma nonostante la conoscenza e il controllo del fare, quando alla fine del lungo percorso, con il cuore in tumulto, sollevo il foglio dal piano di stampa e vedo, impresso sulla carta, ciò che sino a quel momento ho solo immaginato, capisco che la magia è riuscita e che la formula era corretta e che lo “specchio magico” è pronto ad obbedire ad ogni mio desiderio.
